## APPLE TREE STAMP and COUNT is an easy and fun DIY Montessori fine-motor kids activity to practice math skills and One-to-One Correspondence.

This Autumn inspired APPLE TREE kids activity is an EASY, FUN, and EFFECTIVE DIY to reinforce RATIONAL counting in toddlers and preschoolers! Besides, stamping with a peg is an awesome fine-motor exercise while your child is developing hand-eye coordination and bilateral control. Most importantly, you will be using items around the house, so the set up of this Montessori One-to-One Correspondence should be minimal and on the budget. Thus, while counting apples on a tree and stamping them with a peg, your child will be practicing math skills such as cardinality, numeral to quantity association and rational counting through fun hands-on invitation to learn.

## YOU’LL NEED for APPLE TREE STAMP and COUNT

#### Rote Counting vs. Rational Counting

The difference between rote and rational counting is that the first is a process of sequentially memorizing number NAMES and the second is the process of understanding the VALUE of numbers. If a child is only able to recite numbers in order, just like a heart-learned-poem, it by no means indicates the actual mathematical understanding of numbers. It is thus important, that once a child is able to count to 5 or 10, to shift focus from making that number bigger, to making sure that a child can reliably count a small number of manipulatives and assign that quantitative sum to a numeral. Trust me, 1:1 correspondence is a much better indication of your child’s mathematical mastery than a long list of memorized numbers. And the best part, you can introduce 1:1 correspondence starting at an EARLY age by modeling through real-life manipulative and hands-on DIYs. Invite your child to TOUCH each object and provide various hands-on invitations to count, by offering beads, buttons, loose items, blocks, Lego pieces, food items, etc. Make sure that experiences is fun and engaging in order to sustain curiosity and develop the love for numbers and math.

### HOW TO PRESENT Montessori Math One-to-One Correspondence

First, draw trees. (See below about the AGE variation.) Next, either draw or place a numeral next to each tree. Then, while pointing to each NUMERAL tell to your child: “This SAYS ____.” Now, invite your child to stamp the corresponding QUANTITY of “apples.” Then, point to the stamped “apples” on a tree and say “This IS ___.” Children need PRACTICE to learn to associate a SYMBOL (a numeral) to actual QUANTITY ~ what that numeral really is! This APPLE TREE STAMP and COUNT DIY is fun and effective way to learn One-to-One Correspondence and the concept of cardinality.

For AGE 2 YR, start with just three trees with numbers one through three. As the child masters the concept of quantity with numbers 1-3, add the next three numbers. You can also modify this for older children to pratice teens simply by incorporating numbers 10-19 and using a smaller pom pom.

Alternatively, you can invite your child to finger paint, or use a q-tip (especially for larger numbers). Also, invite to use dot markers, dot stickers or stamp with a small sponge brush or even a cotton ball.

CCSS K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.

CCSS K.CC.B.4a: When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.

CCSS K.CC.B.4b: Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.C: Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
