This Winter Solstice Flashlight activity brings the magic of day and night into your home. Your child sees how the sun lights one side of the Earth, so learning becomes real. You feel calm because this setup only needs a globe and a flashlight.

The Winter Solstice is also known as Yule, Midwinter, the Shortest Day of the Year, and the Longest Night. This holiday, which lands on December 21st, is a great opportunity to bring out a globe and a flashlight and discuss the sun, the seasons, the tilt of the Earth, and so much more!

Winter Solstice Flashlight Activity Materials & Supplies:

Below is a list of the materials and supplies you will need for the Winter Solstice Flashlight Activity…

How To Set Up The Winter Solstice FLashlight Activity:

First, place the globe on the table. Then, hold the flashlight in front of one side. Next, invite your child to slowly spin the globe. Finally, ask your child to notice how the light moves as the Earth turns.

Developmental Benefits:

Builds Early Science Thinking
This activity encourages early science thinking as your child compares light and dark. Observing these differences helps curiosity grow naturally.

Supports Focus and Attention
As your child watches slow changes in light, they practice sustained focus. This gentle observation helps strengthen attention skills.

Builds Spatial Awareness
This activity helps your child understand that the Earth turns. Learning this concept in a hands-on way makes early geography easier to grasp.

Extend The Learning:

Here are some ways to extend the learning. Use a darker room to show shadows. Place a small figure on the globe to “experience” day and night. Color a simple paper Earth and shine light on that too. Also, you could let your child explore different light distances.
