  • Go outside with a magnifying glass. Try to find and take a close look at: an insect, tree bar, three different leave, grass, a flower ~ if you would like to explore with a microscope ~ read HERE detail
  • Draw with chalk on the sidewalk (my kids are literally obsessed with these chalks). Go outside and lie down on a paved area. Ask a grown-up to trace your body using sidewalk chalk. Can you draw some of your internal organs? May be a heart?
  • Kindness Rocks: Do you have rocks or stones in your garden? If so, bring one inside to paint on. Maybe write a “kindness message” and secretly leave the stone somewhere for another person to find it.
  • *Natures Mandala: Go outside and collect: stones, leaves, and wildflowers. Perhaps you can find some pine needles, pine cones, acorns. What can you build with what you have found? Offer your child to create a mandala. The word mandala is a Sanskrit term that means “circle,” and it is thus, a circular structure with radial symmetry (having a design that radiates out symmetrically from a unifying center). If you invite your child to pay attention, you can discover that in nature, you can see a lot of mandala patterns. For example, your little one can notice radiating petals of a flower, or tree rings radiating from the center when you observe a stump. You can also notice mandala designs in spiderwebs, certain types of seashells, crystals, snowflakes, eyes, the sun, seeds, fruits, and more. So, invite your child to gather nature finds and create a symmetrical circular design that radiates from the center. 



When you set your PLA area, make sure all shelves are accessible. For example, I am using inexpensive shoe-organizing shelves since they are low to the ground. (See furniture play hacks HERE.)

See HERE. The key is to offer ‘small’ tools like a smaller tub to wash the clothes in. If you have pegs, they are amazing for strengthening the small muscles of the hands. You really do not need to buy a washing board, as kids would love washing the ‘old style’ – by hand. Have fun!

Sensorial Activities focus on and allow the child to refine each of the senses by isolating just one quality. As such, sensorial activities focus on either: sight (visual), touch (tactile), smell (olfactory), taste (gustatory), sound (auditory), and/or stereognostic (kinaesthetic) senses. This month, we will focus on TOUCH.

💡 “What the hand does, the mind remembers.” As such, tactile stimulation is extremely important for the developing brain since the “sensitive period” (which Dr. Montessori defined as a period of special sensitivity to particular stimuli) from birth till the age of five is sensory refinement. So, set SIMPLE invitations to play to trigger sensory stimuli through the power of tactile play since whatever is perceived through the hand goes directly to the brain! And it is crucial that we leverage a child’s innate sensitivity to acquiring and refining sensory skills during the first five years since once the ‘window’ closes, the interest and the ability to absorb the skill effortlessly disappear.

Use dyed rice, sand, small grain … and play hide and seek with alphabet as in the video below.

Also, offer to practice pin poking the alphabet. It is amazing hand-eye coordination and fine motor exercise! As you noticed, I write vowels in blue and consonant in red, according to the Montessori movable alphabet.


SOUND GAMES: Phonemic awareness, which is a subset of phonological awareness, is a child’s ability to notice, hear, explore and identify phonemes, which are the smallest units of sound in spoken words. Simply said, phonemic awareness is a child’s ability to segment words into their component sounds. For example, separating the word “cat” into three distinct phonemes, /k/, /æ/, and /t/, (that is being able to hear the sounds in the word cat and not the letter names) requires phonemic awareness. Being a basis for learning phonics, phonemic awareness improves children’s word reading and reading comprehension, as well as helps children learn to spell. For example, says “cccc” for cat. Or play “I Spy game?”  with language objects.



Before children are introduced to the sandpaper letters they must become familiar with the sounds that letters make. This can be done by playing ‘Sound Games’ in a fun and relaxed manner. I Spy is one of the many sound games that can be played. The ‘I Spy Game’ is an excellent tool to help make children aware that words are made up of individual sounds. Often times this game is played using the surrounding environment, however, it can present too many choices for a child and can be overwhelming, especially when first starting to play this game. If the number of objects are limited it allows the child a greater chance of success. Limiting the choice of objects can be achieved by using real objects on a tray/mat or by using the following printable I Spy Pages.


Also, based on your goals, I created Alphabet in pictures cards. Print them on 4 x 6 photo paper, laminate and place on the ring! I used the highest quality real-life images and I hope Luna enjoys!

Here is a FUN way to explore letter formation and identification. If you have stale cereal, offer it to reproduce letters while referring to the CARDS. Thus, you are turning mundane learning into fun and creative ways YOU can PLAY AND LEARN together! Children are learning through PLAY all the time since “PLAY is the WORK of the child!” Play links sensori-motor, cognitive and socio-emotional experiences and provides the ideal setting for brain growth and development!


  • start with real photographs of real common objects/animals
  • introduce lowercase first
  • introduce alphabet with language 🐅 🍎objects
  • make learning as hands-on as possible and set multi-sensory invitations



Montessori math curriculum focuses on the numeral to quantity association, making abstract learning concrete and hands-on.


A fun way to engage your child and make numeracy and number formation as concrete as possible is by offering to MAKE numbers from play dough. (We are using Sandpaper numbers are a template.)


Another fun way to learn NUMBERS is simply to MAKE them! Use anything you have at hand and follow the child! (This is a next step from “making” numbers from play dough following sandpaper template as here, the child has to reproduce a number formation from memory.)

Sticks Tally Marks


Tally marks help children visualize the numbers six through ten as a group of five, plus the additional ones. So, go on a nature walk and gather some sticks and create your own! You can also use toothpicks, pencils, crayons, pretzels, or popsicle sticks. These gorgeous Grimm’s Waldorf watercolor Number Cards promote number recognition, and quantity to the numeral association as each card depicts the quantity represented by each numeral so the child can count 🐿🐿🐿and confirm 3️⃣.

Pearl Simple 🐚Counting


This is a simple numeral to quantity association with our seashells, “pearls” and Montessori Golden Beads. This is a very concrete math lesson for smaller children ( 2- 3 yrs). See details here ~  🏖Beach ✨Inspired 🐚Nature Study.

p.s. Colorful checker-board beads (used with pear counting) are used in multitudes of lessons and presentations. They are also very easy to make at home. All you need are pipe cleaners and pony beads. See details HERE.




This Watermelon pack is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers to learn pre-writing strokes and 1:1 correspondence with counting seeds. A fun way to turn this printable into HANDS-ON learning is to use black beads as seeds and place over the seed on the printable. Also, you will find two puzzles. (Laminate the entire page and cut along the dotted lines. 2 YO + offer 5-line-puzzle. 3 YO + offer 10-line-puzzle.


If I were to prioritize learning, I would say workbooks are at the bottom of the totem pole. Followed by dynamic printables where children can practice scissor skills, matching, fine motor, and so forth. However, nothing beats hands-on MAKING and MANIPULATING! (See my IG Watermelon Highlight)

The seahorse is a vertebrate of the scientific phylum Chordata. Members of this classification all have spines. This sea creature that measures between 0.9 to 12 inches in length has a bone structure composed of tiny plates covered by a thin, almost translucent skin, instead of scales like other fish. Why segmented pieces? It’s much easier for little people to assemble the picture in fragmented pieces rather than being overwhelmed by a single image! Finally, the play dough color match is amazing to strengthen fine motor control, dexterity, and bilateral coordination!

HOW TO: fold the paper plate in half and poke 10 holes. Insert the thread through the hole and thread a corresponding quantity of beads. Thereafter, kame a knot on each side of the thread. Lastly, offer Luna to move each bead along the thread as she counts them.

💡 Rote Counting vs. Rational Counting:
The difference between rote and rational counting is that the first is a process of sequentially memorizing number names and the second is the process of understanding the value of numbers. If a child is only able to recite numbers in order, just like a heart-learned-poem, it by no means indicates the actual mathematical understanding of numbers. It is thus important, that once a child is able to count to 5 or 10, to shift focus from making that number bigger to making sure that a child can reliably count a small number of manipulatives and assign that quantitative sum to a numeral. Trust me, 1:1 correspondence is a much better indication of your child’s mathematical mastery than a long list of memorized numbers. And the best part, you can introduce 1:1 correspondence starting at an early age by modeling through real-life manipulative and hands-on DIYs. Invite your child to TOUCH each object and provide various hands-on invitations to count, by offering beads, buttons, loose items, blocks, Lego pieces, food items, etc. Make sure that experiences is fun and engaging in order to sustain curiosity and develop the love for numbers and math.



Small world play is not only fun but a hands-on way to explore math, literacy, zoology, botany, paleontology, physics! You name it!

Keep in mind when setting up your small world tray

  • follow your child’s INTERESTS ( 🐉 🧸 🚘 🚜) – that’s your THEME
  • choose a FILLER that is appropriate for your child (6M + offer only TASTE-SAFE or zip-lock/sensory bags/boards options)
  • decide on a GOAL: math? tactile stimulation? Language enrichment? learning about animal habitats?
  • DO NOT set it UP where you will NOT be present! If you are making dinner, set it up in the kitchen. You HAVE to SUPERVISE (or observe/glance with older ones) at ALL TIMES! Small world play is NOT to replace YOU! It’s to engage your child is a creative play while you are THERE and can get to something else! ( Catching up a breath is totally getting to something Lol)

– to make a 10–frame, cut out 2 compartments off an egg carton and bake low at 250 F for 10 min to potentially kills any bacteria or salmonella that might reside on a cartoon
– we are using gold coins as counters (you can use shark teeth as well, just make sure you can 55 counters/items to count for the ten-frame)
– SAND play dough (substitute 25% of flour for regular sand ~ see play-dough recipe HERE) ~ you can also use kinetic sand
– hand-eye coordination
– 1:1 correspondence
-fine motor control (using tongs)

⚠️ Always supervise your child! Small items are poky and a choking hazard! Sand play dough is NOT edible!

Notes from your applications:

Thank you for filling out the questionaries. I have noted Luna’s strengths, weaknesses, and your goals and I will intertwine them into your plan accordingly.

Let me tell you, you have a very special girl! I have not seen anyone having aptitudes for so many learning styles. She is a VISUAL, AUDITORY, TACTILE, READING, and KINESTHETIC learner! Wow! It is amazing! Absorbing new information will be a piece of cake for her! As far as her confidence, we will work on it! I think a HUGE area of Montessori when little people gain confidence is PLA. Dr Montessori actually coined a phrase: “Help Me Do It Myself!” (You will find a lot of info in my eBook – The BASICs.) So, I will make sure to assign extra PLA for her! And from her academic perspective, she is doing unbelievable! And I hear you about the ABC Mouse Lol. My kids are the same! Trus me, hands-on learning is the best! Regarding being a Kinesthetic learner, try adding some gross-motor twists! For example, when you do activities, place a basket in the other room and ask Luna to run back and forth … fetching you whatever you are studying: animals, numbers, letters/objects, shapes. You can also write sticky notes naming parts of the body. Then, stick them on Luna, and ask her to “shake it off” when you pronounce that part of the body. Remember, always try to incorporate movement into your activities to keep the engagement going!

I HIGHLY recommend the Color Code puzzle which can build her confidence! (Actually ANY puzzles are awesome! My kids do 1 puzzle a day! See HERE some of the puzzles we enjoy!) Color -code is a logical puzzle (ages 2-100!) It is amazing for problem-solving and she can do it in her free time, as a game! Below is an example of Adrian working with Color Code.


  • Trees are finishing blooming and small leaves are emerging! Go for a walk in your neighborhood. Can you find three trees with distinctly different colors of the leaves? Can Luna tell you the shades? Lighter/darker … Can you find different colors of green like sea green, lime green, khaki, emerald, etc.
  • Count the number of squirrels/ birds that you see. Have you noted any bunnies? (We started to spot some.) Print Backyard Birds Scavenger Hunt (1) & Birds Scavenger Hunt (2)
  • Print Spring Scavenger Hunt and take it with you on Nature Walks.
  • Have you ever looked up? Try and name three things you have noticed!
  • Close your eyes and listen to all the sounds that you can hear inside or outside. Try and name the sources of these sounds. The Listening Walk book is our absolute favorite!
  • If you have a stethoscope, take it with you on a nature walk. Walk up to the tree and listen for the sap starting to run through the trunk. (You might need to find a spot on a trunk that has a thinner bark.)
  • Take a few pieces of white paper and crayons on a nature walk. Place a paper over the tree’s bark and rub crayons. Do it over a different species of tree. Compare and contrast.


Please enjoy this active video by “The Learning Station.” This is an energetic video where a child will be crossing the midline. The Learning Station: Children’s Yoga Brain Breaks. Also, Luna might enjoy Cosmic Yoga since she likes adventures! My kids love it!



I will comprise the plan for the following month, June, and I will extend your membership. I am including the botany and zoology for the remaining of May, and you can check the main portal for the links for the new unit studies. For May, BOTANY is PLANTs (for June it will be the study of FLOWERS) and for ZOOLOGY for May – we study EARTHWORM (for June will study INSECTS) and for June I will also be adding a HUMAN BODY – teeth and mouth study.

In the meantime, below, we will focus on the 5 Main Montessori Area of Study. Please, let me know if some activities were too easy/hard so that we can adjust.



You mentioned that Luna can button, still, this is a fun way to practice the skill. If you do not have a Montessori buttoning frame, it is very easy to make one yourself from an old shoebox. (You just cut an old shirt in half and hot-glue it to the cardboard.) Alternatively, you can purchase inexpensive frames HERE.


You mentioned Luna cannot tie or lace. It is a very sophisticated skill acquired at around 4-5 YO. But you can practice it with this fun DIY. And believe me, it is MUCH MORE fun tying an egg carton than sneakers!

HOW: place a recycled egg carton in an oven at a low heat: 250 F for 15 min. This will kill any salmonella that might reside inside the carton. Then, find colorful laces (its always more fun with color) and come up with different lacing, and bow tying combinations! SKILLs: hand-eye coordination, fine motor control, dexterity & bilateral coordination.

Some other fun PLA: offer Luna to set the table, make/serve oneself a snack (chop fruits/vegetables; help to vacuum; clean dishes. Try to involve her in daily activities as much as possible! CHECK THE MAIN PORTAL HERE for more PLA.


  • Pots and Pans! Allow your child to match lids to your pots and pans. If you are feeling brave, devote a specific and finite time; during which they can experiment with sound and create their own percussion instruments by using a kitchen tool or two to strike the pots and pans.
  • PLANTS: Water the plants in your home. Is the soil wet or dry? Are the leaves dusty? If so polish them with a wet cloth.
  • Thread napkin rings/holders using a scarf. If you have napkin rings, give your child one or
  • more scarves. Practice threading the scarves through the napkin rings. This is a great fine motor activity.
  • Try some color mixing. (This is a mixture of sensorial work too.) This can be done with a variety of materials from paint and food dye to play dough and clay. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD PRIMARY/SECONDARY COLOR PDF HERE. (I used dot stickers under the written colors ~see an example in a Capillary Action Walking Water post HERE.)
    • Make green with yellow and blue
    • Make orange with red and yellow
    • Make purple with blue and red
    • Make pink with red and white
    • Make different shades by mixing white into other colors
  • Look up the weather forecast for your town. Compare the weather where you live to two other cities. Can you find a city that is much warmer? Can you find a city that is much colder?
  • Help a grown-up to prepare a snack or a meal. Slice a cucumber, banana, a pickle, or an apple.
  • Make pickled cucumbers! They are so fun to make and even more fun to eat! RECIPE: (whisk the ingredients, add sliced cucumber to a mason jar, pour over the mixture to coat well; shake it; set aside for a few hours; leftover store in a refrigerator)
    • 1 large cucumber sliced
    • 1/4 cup of water
    • 1/2 cup of rice or white vinegar
    • 1 teaspoon of salt
    • 2 tablespoons of sugar + 2 tablespoons of honey
    • celery seeds (we used mustard seeds)
    • parsley/dill or other spices you have
    • optional: sliced onion (we added a few garlic clothes)
  • Make a sandwich or wrap for lunch. Use any kind of bread that you like. You might use jelly, peanut butter/if no allergies, cheese, or cucumbers. Cut your wrap or sandwich into small pieces.
  • Have a pizza night. Make your own pizza. If you do not want to make the dough, use English muffins or bagels.
  • Help a grown-up to clean out a car.
  • Help a grown-up to organize a kitchen drawer or cabinet.

For this month, we will focus on SIGHT.


Try matching the color samples, which you can also make from cardboard or using paint samples, to birds (they are colorful). (Details on Montessori color tablets HERE.) If you do not have bird figures, invite Luna to go on a color hunt and match items about the house to either paint samples (if you have any) or just pieces of colored paper.

You can also use paint samples to go on a nature COLOR hunt! (You mentioned you enjoy walks.) Look to match the color of the sky, sunset, the color of leaves/pines, even dirt, in case there are no blooms where you are. Invite Luna to find something yellow as a flower, brown as soil, green as grass, etc.

ALSO, you can easily make Montessori Color Tablets Box 3. Since Luna knows the main colors, you can skip Box 2 and 1. Montessori Color box 3 is divided into 9 sections, containing seven shades of nine different colors: blue, red, yellow, purple, orange, green, pink, black to white, brown. You can see the details HERE.


A BONUS SENSORY BIN (since Luna likes animals) ~ use a cutlery tray to create different habitats.

DSC_0006I am using a bamboo cutlery organizer for this small world invitation to play. This wooden drawer divider has seven compartments (plus another two if expanded). I have created different biomes and habitats to discuss various animals and where they live.

  • 🌳”Forest” is made from green rice (add vinegar and food coloring to dry rice, shake well, and then lay flat to dry) and forest animals.
  • ❄️For “Polar Regions” which include both poles: Antarctica and the Arctics, I simply used dry white rice. A note: although a penguin had never seen a polar bear, they both reside in cold icy conditions, although on different hemispheres.
  • 🌊For our “Ocean” habitat, I used blue water beads! To store your hydrogels, simply add a few drops of tea tree oil and store in a refrigerator ~ they can last for months if in an airtight container, or dry them and have them shrink to their original size. I also added small pebbles to resemble a beach (which we collected during our last trip to the ocean).
  • 🌽To make a “Farm” I used shredded packing paper and dried corn kernels mixed with other dried beans. 
  • 🏜Millet represents the “Desert” habitat with a Kangaroo and a Komodo Dragon. (You can also use yellow cornmeal which is a little finer.) Currently, Komodo dragons are found only on a handful of islands in Indonesia, including the island of Komodo which gives them their name. So, you might ponder, why is this Asian lizard dragon stands alongside a kangaroo, an Australian native? Well, scientists now find that the world’s largest living lizard species, the Komodo dragon, most likely evolved in Australia and dispersed westward to its current home in Indonesia, rather than developed from a smaller ancestor isolated on the Indonesian islands, evolving its large size as a response to lack of competition from other predators. Over the past three years, an international team of scientists unearthed numerous fossils from eastern Australia dated from 300,000 years ago to roughly 4 million years ago that they now know to belong to the Komodo dragon. (Read more here.) 
  • 🌧”Rain Forest” environment is made from the evergreen leaves that grow in our backyard and sticks to resemble bamboo for our pandas.
  • Lastly, “Savanna” is made from green lentils and African animals

Please note, possibilities in creating small world play are endless! Open your cupboard and use what’s in it: oats, cereal, grains, beans, pasta! Let your imagination go wild! This sensory bin can be played for days! The only thing that will happen over time is hydrogels getting smaller, eventually shrinking to their original size. Otherwise, your little one will have hours of purposeful real-life simulated imaginary play! A last note: most Montessori activities are presented on a tray and are done generally on a mat. With sensory bins especially, you would want to contain any spills or “mess” so I strongly encourage to present this tray on a large mat or a blanket. This way you can just shake it off, minimizing the cleaning up part.

Have you worked with Montessori metal insets? They are a part of the language work that prepares the hand for writing. They are simply an amazing tool to use anytime starting at 3 yr. You can find an inexpensive version HERE. (You can browse my Amazon store HERE.)


Download the Metal Insets instructions HERE. Please see HERE triangle, and HERE circle presentation. You can work on other shapes in a similar manner.

Also, try exploring 2D shapes. Try making them from pipe cleaners and beads, from play dough, from craft sticks with magnets in each end. Try ‘tracing’ – aka ‘making’ shapes with pom poms, small toys, wash tape, grains, etc.

Also, make a DIY shape lacing activity ~ See HERE – this activity is amazing for shape recognition and fine motor control.


From the information I have gathered from your questionnaires since Luna recites but does not recognize all the letters in the alphabet, we should start with revision by doing letter hunts which are tactile ways to reinforce letter formation, identification, and phonic awareness. So, this month you should focus on the first phonetic set. (If she moves fast through them, just let me know by the end of June, how much were you able to cover.)

In a Montessori language curriculum, alphabet letters are not first presented to a child in alphabetical order like A, B, C, D, etc. The idea is to introduce the letters phonetically (the way they sound) rather than by their name. Moreover, the phonetical grouping of certain consonants and vowels have proven to be very effective in allowing children to form quickly as many words as possible. There are a few suggested Montessori phonetical grouping orders. We are following an order suggested in How to Raise an Amazing Child the Montessori Way by Tim Seldin. You can use traditional Montessori wooden Movable Alphabet or sandpaper letters, or foam, paper, or wooden letters you have handy to introduce these phonetical sets. Offer a child to go on a “letter-hunt” where s/he looks for objects that begin with each letter sound. (You can find more info in my eBook under Chapter 10: Language.) Almost every Montessori lesson (from Language to Geography to Math) is presented as a Three Period Lesson, which is proven to afford a child optimum assimilation of learning material. The presentation can be very confusing (trust me, I have been there), but when you break it down, it is really simple.

Also, a big part of Montessori language curriculum is exploring letters through senses. I suggest, offering various tracing trays to practice tracing letters, shapes and numbers. I know resources could be scares so use sand, espom salt, even dirt as a filler.

Moreover, you might want to practice name recognition by salt-painting. It is also a fun activity to strengthen the small muscles of the hand.

The recent adaptation of the common core state standards expects a five-year-old (I know Luna has some time) to know his/her first name and might be asked to write it! I know it is crazy! However, no one does well under pressure or expectation! Your child WILL write and read when the brain is neurologically ready just like she learned to walk and speak! Rather prepare your child with fun and engaging invitations to learn and play! And before putting a pen in your child’s hand, make sure that they have had enough fine motor control and hand strength by having plenty of opportunities to practice: using droppers, finger-painting, squeezing tongs, exploring play dough, pinching pegs, threading pony beads, cutting with scissors and so forth! 5 Main Strategies

Let’s start by reviewing the 5 main math strategies.

I see that Luna knows all the numbers till 10 and counts till 20. So, we can skip the DIY Sandpaper Numbers. Instead I would like to focus on Odd & Even and Numbers Memory Game.

  1. Collect to 10: 2 players, a basket with small loose items such as small cubes/animals/cars: roll a ten dice, if lands on an even – that player takes1 item; if lands on odd – take noting. The winner is who gets 10 items first.
  2. Flip the coin Game: 2 players & 1 coin:  flip the coin: if lands on the head, that player says all even numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 — if lands on the tail, the player says aloud odd numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 9.


Also you can make DIY ODD – EVEN CARDS


– a recycled cardboard
– a knife
– a marker
– popsicle or crafts sticks

GOAL: – number to quantity association
– odd vs even
– fine motor skills ( pulling the sticks OUT is easier for little ones than wigging them IN)

Since Luna is able to repeat the series of four numbers, it means that she is able to process information more abstractly. So, I think this month we can focus on strengthening her memory while playing this fun memory game. Please let me know if it is of challenge/interest?

May is the month when you start seeing earthworms as they slowly awaken from their hibernation. And you are more likely to encounter them if you go outdoors after it rains since the rainwater often floods their burrows/tunnels, so earthworms move towards the surface (watch for them on roads and sidewalks.)
