Materials & Supplies
Below is the list of materials and supplies you will need to make this Egg Carton Christmas Tree Craft:
- recycled egg cartons
- paints
- colorful pom poms
- color-matching dot stickers
- tongs (optional)

You will also need paintbrushes and washable paints.
Instructions
Step-by-step instructions on how to make this Egg Carton Christmas Tree Craft.

First, we created a backdrop to set the scene (this step is completely optional). We painted a piece of cardboard, dividing it into two sections: the top half in blue to represent the sky and the bottom half in white to resemble snow. This simple touch adds a festive and wintry vibe to your project!

Next, cut out sections of your egg cartons and arrange them in a pyramid shape to resemble a pine tree. Stack and layer them to create the iconic triangular silhouette of a Christmas tree, giving it a charming and textured look.

Decide which side of the egg carton you will use.

Next, paint the egg carton sections to bring your Christmas tree to life. We chose a festive green for the tree and made sure to paint both sides. This adds versatility, as we’ll be using the pieces for additional activities later on!

One creative way to decorate your egg carton Christmas tree is by attaching a string of yarn to mimic a garland. Simply weave or drape the yarn across the tree layers, adding a festive and colorful touch to your upcycled masterpiece!

After adding the yarn garland, give your child dot stickers to decorate it. These colorful stickers can represent ornaments or lights, allowing your little one to personalize the tree while enhancing their fine motor skills and creativity!
Color Sorting Egg Carton Christmas Tree Craft

Another way to use this recycled DIY Christmas tree craft as an engaging kids’ activity is to invert the egg cartons and use them as compartments for color sorting. Simply place colorful dot stickers inside each compartment, then provide your child with tongs to match and transfer pom-poms into the corresponding colors. This creative twist transforms your DIY tree into a fine motor activity, encouraging color recognition, matching, and hand-eye coordination. It’s a playful and educational way to extend the fun!
Developmental Benefits of Egg Carton Christmas Tree Craft
Hand-eye coordination: Helps children improve the ability to synchronize their hands and eyes while working on tasks.
Color recognition: Encourages kids to identify and differentiate between various colors during the activity.
Fine motor control (strengthening the small muscles of the hand): Enhances precision and strength in hand movements, crucial for writing and other daily tasks.
Spatial awareness: Develops an understanding of how objects fit and relate to one another in space.
Dexterity: Builds nimbleness and skill in handling small objects with accuracy.
Problem-solving: Encourages kids to think critically as they sort, match, and arrange items effectively.
Development milestones to learn to identify colors
Developmental milestones for color recognition typically emerge between 12 to 18 months. Around the age of 1 year, children begin to notice different colors, and by 2.5 to 3 years, they can often name and identify various colors. This makes ages 2 to 3 the perfect time to introduce this activity. Encourage your child to sort pom-poms by matching them to their corresponding color stickers for a fun and educational experience!
