This is an  Easter-inspired DIY version of traditional Montessori Sound Cylinders. So, let’s embark on a child’s senses journey focusing solely on the sense of hearing with this Easter-inspired twist! While the traditional version features six pairs, we’ll be crafting three matching sets today. (Feel free to make more, though.) And, just like all Montessori materials, there’s a built-in control of error.

Materials and Supplies:

Below is the list of sensorial materials you will need to make Easter Egg Sound cylinder jars:

  1. plastic eggs of different colors
  2. a marker
  3. dot stickers
  4. different textures such as grains, pasta, cereal, nature objects or items, etc.

Control of error: Ensure that the numbers on the bottom of each egg match, indicating a matching pair.

Instructions:

Let’s start by filling one blue and one red egg with identical filler. Thus, you will end up with three pairs.

First, for the loudest sound, fill one matching pair with pasta (be sure to place a number 1 sticker on each egg in this pair).

Next, for the second matching pair, fill them with cereal or anything else that’s not too loud or too soft, and place a number 2 sticker on each egg.

Finally, for the softest sound, fill the last matching pair with rice, and label that pair as number 3.

Now, my Montessori Homeschoolers, whether it is your first time or not, you are ready for your little one to explore the world of sound!

Adjusting the Level of Difficulty of These Homemade Montessori Sound Jars

A note: You can adjust the level of difficulty by filling the eggs with fillers that have very similar sounds, making it challenging. This requires a keen auditory sense in older children. Alternatively, for younger children, you can use fillers with drastically different sounds, such as pasta in one pair and pom poms in the other. This makes it easier for little ones to distinguish between the sounds, leading to success and building confidence. The key is to tailor the activity to suit every child’s learning needs and abilities!

Developmental Benefits of Sensorial Activities

This own Montessori Sound DIY Cylinders material offers numerous developmental benefits for children:

Sensory Development: This activity helps children refine their sense of hearing by isolating the auditory sense. By focusing on distinguishing between different sounds, children enhance their auditory discrimination skills.

Concentration and Focus: As children engage in matching the sounds, they develop concentration and focus. They need to listen carefully to identify and pair the cylinders with similar sounds, promoting attention to detail.

Fine Motor Skills: Manipulating the cylinders and placing them carefully encourages the development of fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Problem-Solving Skills: The activity incorporates control of error, where matching numbers on the bottom of the eggs indicate a correct pair. Children learn to recognize patterns and problem-solve independently.

Language Development: Exploring and describing the sounds they hear encourages language development. Children may use descriptive words to articulate their observations and communicate their findings.

Self-Regulation: Engaging in a structured activity like the Montessori Sound Cylinders fosters self-regulation skills. Children learn to follow instructions, take turns, and persist in the task until completion.

Independence and Confidence: The hands-on nature of Montessori activities empowers children to work independently and build confidence in their abilities. As they successfully match the cylinders, they experience a sense of accomplishment.

Summary

The Montessori Sound Cylinders DIY activity offers a holistic learning experience, promoting sensory, cognitive, and socio-emotional development in children. What makes it even more appealing is how easy it is to DIY with items readily available at home or in craft stores. Repurposing simple materials like plastic eggs and various fillers, is an excellent way to create an engaging and educational activity that fosters important skills in children while encouraging creativity and resourcefulness. Not to mention, this DIY makes a perfect Montessori toy for early years development. Overall it is a fun way to repurpose everyday items while promoting auditory discrimination.
