What if ‘Who do you want to be’ isn’t the right question, and focusing on today could transform your child’s learning journey?
What If ‘Who Do You Want to Be’ Isn’t the Right Question? Let’s Focus on Today. Let me take you down memory lane … I can still picture it—the chalky scent of the blackboard, the scratchy feel of the hard plastic chair beneath me as I sat with my feet swinging just above the floor. My teacher stood at the front of the classroom, her voice echoing off the walls as she asked each of us the question we’d all heard before:
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
The answers came rolling in like a well-rehearsed script. “Doctor.” “Lawyer.” “Veterinarian.” Each child, one after another, named a future version of themselves they could barely imagine.
When it was my turn, I froze for a second. My Mom had always told me that happiness was the most important thing in life, and I could still hear her words ringing in my ears: “Whatever you do, make sure it makes you happy.”
So, when the teacher asked what I wanted to be, I wasn’t thinking about the future at all. I was daydreaming about the moment—the warmth of the sun streaming through the windows, the excitement of recess just around the corner, and the sweet anticipation of going home to play.
So, I answered: “Happy.”
The teacher, slightly puzzled, smiled and said, “I don’t think you understood the assignment.” But with the simple wisdom that only a child can offer, I looked up and replied, “Maybe you don’t understand life.”
Well, in reality, I said I wanted to become an attorney (and that dream did come true). But I wish I could claim a more profound response. The wisdom behind this story actually belongs to John Lennon. As a child, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he simply answered happy. His teacher, puzzled, told him he didn’t understand the assignment, and Lennon, with childlike clarity, replied, “Maybe you don’t understand life.”
That story makes me wonder: What if we spent less time worrying about the future and more time embracing the joy, the beauty, and the wonder of today?
What if we stopped asking our children what they want to become and started focusing on who they are in this very moment?
As a homeschooling mom, you’re likely bombarded with advice on how to “prepare your child”—how to raise independent thinkers, how to get them ready to read, how to make them confident.
But what about today? Right now, in this moment?
What about the child standing in front of you, full of their own joy, curiosity, and potential right now?
I know firsthand how overwhelming homeschooling can be. There are so many philosophies, resources, and ideas out there. You’re trying to do it all, but instead of feeling empowered, you’re drowning in uncertainty.
You’re wondering, “Am I doing this right? Am I enough?”
Well, let me tell you – You are enough!
But what if there was a way to make homeschooling simpler? A way to let go of that overwhelm, that uncertainty, and to bring back the joy and fun into learning?
Imagine waking up each day excited about the hands-on activities you’ll share with your child—activities that don’t require hours of prep, that align perfectly with their stage of development, and that you can start today.
That’s what the Monthly Kids Activities Plan (MKAP) is all about.
It’s not about raising perfect children for some far-off future. It’s about nurturing the child you have today, loving them exactly as they are, and filling their days with meaningful, joyful learning.
But here’s the thing: without a plan, it’s easy to get lost. Days slip by, and that overwhelm creeps in again. You know that feeling—piles of unfinished projects, frustration from not knowing where to start, and a creeping sense of guilt that maybe you’re not doing enough.
If you don’t take action now, those feelings won’t just disappear. They’ll grow, slowly chipping away at the connection and joy you’re trying to build with your child.
MKAP is your lifeline. It’s your opportunity to leave the overwhelm behind and dive into a world where learning is fun, seamless, and stress-free. Every month, you’ll receive beautifully crafted activities that fit right into your life, tailored to your child’s age, interests, and needs.
You’ll be giving them—and yourself—the gift of time, presence, and a learning experience that’s rich with love and curiosity.
I truly believe that when we start focusing on the present, the future takes care of itself.
