Instructions
Painting the Hand
If you’re doing this craft with a younger child, you will need to paint your child’s hand. At the same time, older children can paint their hands themselves.
Then, start with the brown paint, and paint it on your child’s palm and then the thumb.
Next, paint the other fingers. Choose any color combination you like; every color will become our turkey’s feathers!
Painting Tips
- Use plenty of paint and work quickly since the paint will start to dry.
- Use a different paintbrush for every color since you will need to work quickly.
- Make sure to have a recycled egg carton or a paper plate or newspaper to rest the wet paintbrushes on while you work on the next color.
- Have wet wipes ready and guide a child quickly to the sink so that they do not touch their clothes or the furniture before washing their hands.
Making a Print
Next, while a child spreads their fingers a little, invite them to hold their hand flat and gently press the hand down onto the white paper.
When it is time to lift the hand, hold the paper down so it does not stick to the wet painted hand, and ask a child to gently lift the hand off the paper without smudging the print.

Let the turkey handprint dry before decorating it.

Instructions How to Make A Perfect Handprin
One of the quickest ways to make a perfect handprint is to press the painted hand down on canvas or heavy card stock. You can also pat the hand gently to ensure that the entire handprint will be transferred to paper. Hold the hand still for a few seconds before lifting it carefully. Make sure to keep the hand still to prevent smudging. Then, let your project dry before drawing on it or decorating it further. Lastly, remember to write a child’s name and the date.

We all loved how this turkey handprint craft turned out!
It was easy and fun to make, and if you make them throughout the years, do compare them next to each other to notice how your child’s hand is growing.
Did I mention they make the cutest keepsakes?

This isn’t just a turkey, as you can plainly see.
Montessoti From The Heart
I made it with my hand, which is a part of me.
This card is very special. I dipped my hand in paint,
And pressed it firmly down, so turkey isn’t faint.
I hope you will remember this keepsake, made with love,
And even years later, when I am grown up.

10 Ways to Foster Real Gratitude in Your Kids This Thanksgiving
Teaching kids to say “thank you” is wonderful, but helping them genuinely feel gratitude? That’s the magic. Gratitude is more than politeness—it’s a perspective on life. Here’s how to nurture that outlook in your family, especially with Thanksgiving right around the corner.
1. Lead by Example: Say “Thank You” Often and Sincerely
Kids learn by watching. Make gratitude a part of everyday life by thanking people openly—thank the cashier, the delivery driver, or even each other for small things like helping with chores. When kids see you showing genuine appreciation, they’re more likely to follow your lead.
2. Count Your Blessings Together
Make time each day to share something you’re grateful for. Whether at dinner or before bed, ask each family member to name one thing they appreciated that day, big or small. Over time, this practice helps kids see the bright spots in their daily lives.
3. Encourage Giving Back as a Family
Nothing fosters gratitude like helping others. Volunteer as a family at a food pantry, make care packages or have your kids rake leaves for an elderly neighbor. When kids give their time, they’re less likely to take things like home, health, and family for granted.
4. Teach Them to Look for the Silver Lining
Life has ups and downs, but helping kids see the positives, even in frustrating moments, builds resilience and gratitude. When disappointed, gently prompt them to think about something good that came out of it. This slight shift in perspective can significantly impact how they see the world.
5. Be a Grateful Parent
Our kids are a blessing, and telling them why we’re grateful for them—their sense of humor, kindness, or creativity—reinforces that gratitude goes beyond material things. Feeling valued for who they are boosts their confidence and helps them appreciate others for who they are, too.
6. Encourage Kids Writing Thank-You Notes
Handwritten notes might feel a little old-school, but they’re a heartfelt way for kids to show genuine thanks. Encourage them to write a simple note for a gift or a kind gesture—it doesn’t have to be fancy or long, just a few words from the heart. Putting their gratitude on paper helps them pause and think about what they’re thankful for, and it always brings a warm smile to whoever receives it.
7. Keep “Stuff” in Perspective
Overloading kids with material things can dull their appreciation. They focus more on getting the next thing than valuing what they have. By keeping gifts thoughtful and intentional, kids learn to appreciate each item instead of always looking for something “better.”
8. Have Kids Contribute When They Want Something
If your kids get an allowance or do small chores, let them save up for something unique. When they work toward something, it teaches patience, responsibility, and appreciation for what they earn. They’ll treasure that item much more because they had a hand in getting it.
9. Tie Gratitude to Your Family’s Beliefs
In many faith traditions, gratitude is vital. If you attend services or have a personal practice, include your kids. Even a simple prayer of thanks before meals can help them see gratitude as a way of connecting with something larger than themselves.
10. Watch for Teachable Moments
You can teach gratitude in everyday situations. Point out moments of kindness or teamwork, or share stories about how people overcame challenges. Kids learn best through real-life examples; these moments help make gratitude a part of their natural outlook.
Try adding a few of these ideas to your family routine this Thanksgiving. Gratitude takes root slowly, habitually, and it’s worth every effort. By fostering it early, you’re helping your kids grow into happier, more resilient adults.
