Confession Time: My mascara melted at a pro photoshoot—discover the real lesson on visibility, alignment, and mindset for moms in the 7-23-2025 newsletter.
I was under blistering studio lights—mascara melting, sweat dripping, two strangers fussing over what they called “empowered-casual”—when it hit me:
After ten scrappy, selfie-powered years, I’d officially run out of places to hide.
For a decade my “photo strategy” was pure mom-hack. I would stand by the window, hand my phone to whichever kid had the steadiest thumb, pray for one semi-decent shot, and call it a day.
It worked.
It was real.
And honestly? It felt safe.
Until Sydney, my branding coach, said, “Anya, this is non-negotiable—your selfies don’t make the cut anymore. They’ve served you long enough—time to leap out of that comfort zone, not tomorrow, more like yesterday.“
Yikes. That’s precisely why we hire a coach—someone who isn’t just a feel-good mentor preserving comfy vibes, but a straight-shooter who loves you enough to call out the B.S. and shove you where it stings.
So I booked the shoot.
Not just for a Female Entrepreneur magazine spread (though—holy wow, I am so excited!)
I needed head shots for all of it:
- The Anya Garcia Show podcast—finally live and loud
- A new YouTube channel so we can actually hang out, face-to-face
- An Instagram profile that deserves more than a 2018 logo selfie
- The brand-new website my brilliant designer, Alex, crafted from six months of midnight magic. (Coming soon!)

Me, striking my “confident-casual” pose in front of a pink backdrop—blissfully unaware that five more outfit changes, three lighting tweaks, and a small puddle of studio sweat were still ahead of me. (Behind-the-scenes snap courtesy of my ever-patient photographer.)
This wasn’t vanity; it was visibility.
Choosing to stand in the light of the thing I’ve quietly built while wiping noses, calming tantrums, and reminding you to chase your own voice— even when I was still chasing mine.
Big Takeaway
There comes a moment when hiding feels heavier than being seen—and that’s your cue to step forward.
Try This — Your 3-Step “Show-Up” Sprint
- Trade “ready” for “willing.” Courage shows up before confidence.
- Remember: scrappy got you started, clarity carries you further.
- Visibility is service. Your people can’t find help they can’t see.
One: Swap “ready” for “willing.”
- Catch every thought that starts with “I’ll do it when…” and flip it to “I’m willing to do it even if…”
- Calendar the uncomfortable action within the next 24 hours (book the shoot, hit “Go Live,” send the pitch). Courage first, confidence later.
Two: Upgrade one scrappy habit.
- Keep what works (your authentic voice), but sharpen one edge that’s holding you back.
- Example: still using window-light selfies? Keep the natural vibe, add a $15 tripod + remote and batch-shoot five polished images in the same time it used to take for one blurry snap.
Shop my favorite tripod here and my light here.
Three: Treat visibility as service—homeschool-mom edition.
- Jot down the exact question a fellow homeschool mama texted you this week (“How do you teach fractions without tears?”).
- Film a 60-second reel or story—messy kitchen table and all—showing your simplest fix (think: LEGO bricks as fraction bars).
- Post it within 24 hours and invite another “stuck” question in the caption. Your community can’t binge the help you never share, and real-life snapshots beat Pinterest-perfect every single time.
Spend 15 minutes on each step this week and watch “next-level you” move from scary idea to muscle memory.
Real talk?
I still prefer messy buns to blowouts, but impact > comfort every time.
