Utterly Alone for 7 Years! Why Sibling Dynamics Might Be the Parenting Hack You Need | Newsletter

Anya and Anastasia

From utterly alone child to sibling ecosystem: discover the surprising power of the “multiple-kids”— a fresh perspective on parenting, sibling learning, and connection.

For the first seven years of my life,  I was completely and utterly alone.

Okay, I wasn’t technically alone—there were parents, grandparents and a small army of teddy-bear students—but no sibling, and that felt alone enough to take matters into my own hands.

So on my seventh birthday I made an announcement: the solo era was over.

Day 1: “Mom, can I please have a sister?” — No.

Day 2: “Mom, pretty please?” — Still no.

Day 1,875: (rough estimate) “Moooom, I reeeeally need a sister!” — Fine, I’ll think about it.

Nine months later, boom—mission accomplished. My baby sister arrived, and with her came the shocking truth:

I didn’t actually want to share my toys with her!

I just needed a ‘student’ who could walk, talk, and survive my ‘classroom’ longer than a stuffed bear.

That’s how I learned early: more kids doesn’t mean more chaos—it means a built-in crew for learning, laughter, and the occasional hostage negotiation over crayons.

(Spoiler for today’s newsletter: that same “ecosystem” magic is why homeschooling multiple kiddos is a blessing, not a hurdle…)

Big Idea: More kids doesn’t mean more chaos—they create a built-in learning ecosystem.

When you step back, older siblings step up, younger ones level up, and everyone learns twice.

Try This at Home

✔️ Start where the youngest is. Build one shared activity at their level; older kids reinforce skills by modeling, not waiting.

✔️ Rotate attention on a timer. 10-15 focused minutes with each child while the others dive into a “busy box” (quiet toys, audiobooks, or chores).

✔️ Delegate the mini-teach. Let the child who “gets it” explain the concept to a sibling—peer teaching locks in mastery and lightens your load.

Me and my nieces
Me and my nieces

Meet my sweetest nieces—living proof that the “multiple-kids ecosystem” really works (and that Scandinavian genes definitely ace the cuteness test).

Real talk?

Juggling multiple kids can feel like running airport traffic control—someone’s yelling for a snack, someone else can’t find a pencil, and I’m secretly Googling “earplugs for moms.”

Yet the moment the oldest explains fractions to the youngest (while the middle one supplies Lego props), the whole circus turns into pure, shoulder-dropping magic.
