Fun Spinning Ice Penguins Sensory Bin | Video Tutorial

Introducing spinning frozen penguins! As they twirl, glide, and maybe attempt a triple axel (or, well, a wobbly waddle-twirl) on the icy dance floor. It’s a spectacle that could even make the coldest of hearts melt (pun intended, of course!)

Spinning a penguin isn’t just about the fun—it’s a sneaky way to boost wrist strength in kids while developing motor skills and refining coordination. As they give that little twirl, they’re giving their wrist muscles a workout, gradually building the strength and control required for future writing and other essential tasks.  And beyond muscles, it’s a sensory adventure, too, offering feedback to their brains and improving their body awareness.

How To Make Spinning Penguins Sensory Play Bin Tutorial

Best part? They won’t even realize they’re flexing those muscles—they’ll just be having a blast with a spinning penguin pal!

Sounds like play? Well, it is—but it’s also so much more! Spinning penguins isn’t just fun; it’s a fantastic way to strengthen wrist rotation, which builds the small muscles in the hands and wrists. This helps improve fine motor skills, hand strength, and coordination while preparing little ones for tasks like writing, drawing, and manipulating objects with precision.

Montessori Sensory Play Tray Skills

“He does it with his hands, by experience, first in play and then through work. The hands are the instruments of man’s intelligence.”

Dr. Maria Montessori. The Absorbent Mind.

Hand-Eye Coordination

Hand-eye coordination is when the brain and hands work together to grab and spin a penguin. The ability to coordinate the information received through the eyes to control, guide, and direct the hands in accomplishing a given task is a very important skill for toddlers and preschoolers.

Fine Motor Control

When children practice small muscle hand control by spinning, pinching, transferring, etc., they develop the strength, dexterity, and control needed to manipulate many everyday items such as a pencil, spoon, button, scissors, zippers, and more. By grasping and spinning, a child is learning to perfect a pincer grip (around 1 YO) by plucking something with a thumb and forefinger.

Dexterity

This Montessori Sensory Play Tray builds dexterity and muscle tone. A child is perfecting skills and ease in using hands by manipulating figurines, thus building strength in fingers and hand muscles.

Bilateral Coordination

It refers to the ability to use both sides of the body simultaneously in a coordinated manner. Bilateral movement is the ability to use both arms and hands together. Small children have no preference for using either hand. So, learning to use both hands together in a coordinated way is an important first step in developing a specialized/dominant hand. Reciprocal movements (using both hands together alternatingly) lead to strong bilateral coordination skills.

This Montessori Sensory Play Tray is also a fun way to sneak in a science lesson on physics and the state of matter.

Properties of Water | Kids Science

If you have a kindergartener, use this fun sensory small-world play tray to discuss the properties of water. For example, explain that freezing is the change that occurs when water changes into a solid as the temperature decreases when you place it in a freezer. On the other hand, melting is when water changes from a solid to a liquid as the temperature increases. These are both examples of changes in the states of matter of substances.

Tips on How To Set Up Small World Play

Did you know the average attention span is just 2–3 minutes per year of a child’s age? That’s why it’s important to set up small-world play in a way that captures and sustains their attention. Here’s how to make it both engaging and safe:

  1. Follow Your Child’s Interests: Their interests should guide the theme—animals, cars, or a winter wonderland.
  2. Choose the Right Sensory Filler: For younger children (6M+), stick to taste-safe options like edible dough, zip-lock sensory bags, or water. Water is always a crowd favorite!
  3. Set a Goal: Decide what you want to focus on—tactile stimulation, counting, language enrichment, or learning about animal habitats.
  4. Keep It Simple: Less is more. A clutter-free setup invites more focused play.
  5. Add Tools for Toddlers (2+): Scoops, spoons, and small containers encourage exploration and develop fine motor skills.
  6. Supervise at All Times: Set up small-world play where you’ll be present, like in the kitchen if you’re making dinner. This isn’t a replacement for you! It’s a way to engage your child while you catch your breath or tackle a task nearby.

Small-world play is all about creativity, connection, and exploration—so set it up thoughtfully and enjoy the moments of discovery together!

Benefits of Multi-Sensorial Stimulation

Recent research advocates that combining the sense of touch with other senses, such as vision, hearing, smell, and/or taste, helps build cognitive skills. In fact, pediatricians now advocate for simultaneous multi-sensorial stimulation!

The nervous system is multisensorial right from its early development stage when a toddler, for example, uses a sense of touch to explore the texture of food, smell, and taste to identify it, and the vestibular sense to sit upright at a weaning chair during food offerings. In fact, hands-on learning through the power of sensory play happens all the time!

Besides advancing fine motor skills, children also develop language, social interaction, and reasoning skills as they strengthen neurological pathways within the developing brain! Sensory play also helps develop new synapses between neurons, leading to lasting memory and brain agility! Thus, I pay homage to the power of sensory play!

OOBLECK Penguins Small World Play Tray

To make oobleck, mix 1 cup of cornstarch with 1/2 cup of water in a bowl, stirring until it reaches the perfect consistency—it should feel solid when pressed but flow like a liquid when released. If it’s too runny, add more cornstarch, and if it’s too thick, add a little more water.

Penguin-Sensory-Learning-Kit
Penguin-Sensory-Learning-Kit

For a colorful twist, mix in a few drops of food coloring. Oobleck is a fascinating sensory play material that behaves like both a solid and a liquid, making it perfect for hands-on exploration. When you’re done, let it dry and scrape it off surfaces or rinse with warm water, but be sure to dispose of it in the trash to avoid clogging pipes!

Summary

Penguin Awareness Day is a great time to explore polar regions and animals! Offer to engage little learners with fun penguin activity ideas during the chilly winter months. For example, set up a simple sensory bin with white rice, loose parts, and pretend snow for a hands-on penguin number sort that encourages critical thinking and building STEAM skills. Alternatively, add pom poms, ice cubes, or even real snow to make it even more exciting. Pair the bin with themed books about emperor penguins or arctic animals for a cross-curricular approach that works perfectly with preschool lesson plans or preschool programs.

For even more creative ways to keep a curious toddler engaged, try a snowman sensory bin or a sensory bottle as part of your hands-on activity lineup. These activities can spark long stretches of imaginative play, making them a great addition to any simple winter theme.

Whether it’s a favorite element of play, sensory trays, or a free download (Grab a Coloring Book above) for extra inspiration, these ideas offer a lot of penguin fun while seamlessly incorporating learning into play. It’s an exciting way to turn the little things into a big impact on your child’s development!
