Christmas Tree Pom Pom Push is a fun activity for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners to promote fine motor control, color recognition, hand-eye coordination, and bilateral coordination.

Christmas Tree Pom-Pom Push Instruction:

Print on 8.5″ x 11″ letter-size paper. Secure the printout over cardboard or a recycled box with tape or glue. Make incisions with a craft knife. Invite a child to push color-matching pom poms into the corresponding holes. You can also add a numeracy twist and invite your child to push a specific quantity or ask to count ALOUD as the pom pom falls through the hole.

If you choose a box with little ones (age 6 M+), also discuss OBJECT PERMANENCE ~ that the object still exists even though it disappears from view. You can also scale the picture to print BIGGER or make LARGER holes to use larger pom poms. Still, supervise as a hawk since pom poms are a choking hazard! Make sure nothing goes into their mouth!
We chose just cardboard to promote bilateral coordination, and it is fun to see how pom poms drop through the holes!

Christmas Tree Pom-Pom Push SKILLS:

♡ HAND-EYE coordination ~ when brain and hands work together ~ the ability to coordinate the information received through the eyes to control, guide, and direct the hands in the accomplishment of a given task.

♡ FINE MOTOR CONTROL ~ when children practice small muscle hand control by tonging, pinching, transferring, threading, etc, they develop the strength, dexterity, and control needed to manipulate many everyday items such as a pencil, spoon, buttons, scissors, zippers, and more … “He does it with his hands, by experience, first in play and then through work. The hands are the instruments of man’s intelligence.” ~ Dr. Maria Montessori. The Absorbent Mind. Examples are learning to perfect a pincer grip (around 1 YO) that is plucking something with a thumb and forefinger.

♡ DEXTERITY ~perfecting skills and ease in using their hands ~ it builds DEXTERITY and MUSCLE TONE – manipulating loose items builds strength in fingers and hand muscles.

♡ BILATERAL COORDINATION ~ the ability to use both sides of the body at the same time in a coordinated manner, that is, eventually using one hand dominantly and the other to assist. For example, when the child holds a pipe cleaner with one hand and threads with the other, or holds a colander with one hand and inserts or pulls pipe cleaners with another or while using scissors and holding paper, or holding the whisk with one hand and pulling silk with the other. Bilateral movement is the ability to use both arms and hands together ~a fancy way of saying to engage both sides of the body at the same time. Small children have no preference for using either hand. So, learning to use BOTH hands together in a coordinated way is actually an important first step in developing a specialized/dominant hand. Reciprocal movements (using both hands together in an alternating way) lead to strong bilateral coordination skills.
