Developmental Benefits:

Did you know that engaging your little one in color sorting is not just fun but also boosts their development? Here are some of the developmental benefits that your child can gain from engaging in this activity.

Hand-Eye Coordination:

Engaging in activities that involve picking, placing, and sorting items like pom poms can enhance hand-eye coordination, which is crucial for various daily tasks and learning activities.ย It is the ability to coordinate the information received through the eyes to control, guide, and direct the hands in the accomplishment of a given task ~ akaย when the brain and hands work together.ย

Fine Motor Skills:

Sorting and placing small objects like pom poms requires the use of fine motor skills, aiding in the development and refinement of muscles in the hands and fingers. When children practice small muscle hand control by pushing, pinching, transferring, posting, etc, they develop the strength, dexterity, and control needed to manipulate many everyday items such as a pencil, spoon, button, scissors, zippers, and more.

Cognitive Skills:

Sorting by colors encourages cognitive development by helping children understand and categorize objects based on similarities and differences, stimulating critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Focus and Concentration:

Engaging in hands-on activities that involve sorting and crafting can improve a child’s ability to focus and concentrate on a task for an extended period, enhancing their attention span.

Language Development:

Through discussions about colors, shapes, and the creative process, children can expand their vocabulary and communication skills.

Bilateral Coordination,ย which is the ability to useย bothย sides of the body at the same time in a coordinated manner, that is, eventually using one hand dominantly and the other to assist. Small children have no preference for using either hand. So, learning to useย bothย hands together in a coordinated way is actually an important first step in developing a specialized/dominant hand.ย Reciprocal movementsย (using both hands in alternating fashion) develop strong bilateral coordination skills.

Encourages Problem Solving:

This activity promotes critical thinking. Toddlers figure out pom pom placement. They learn from trial and error.

Fosters Creativity:
This activity sparks imagination. Toddlers decorate the Christmas tree. They express themselves freely.

Extend The Learning:

You can also add a numeracy twist and invite your child to push a specific quantity or ask to count aloud as the pom pom falls through the hole.

If you choose a box, with little ones (age 6 M+) also discuss object permanence ~ that the object still exists even though it disappears from view. You can also scale the picture to print BIGGER or make larger holes to use larger pom poms. Still, supervise at all times since pom poms are a choking hazard! Make sure nothing goes into their mouth!

We chose just cardboard to promote bilateral coordination, and it is fun to see how pom poms drop through the holes!
