DIY hearts melted crayons are a perfect Valentine class gift hack or a way to repurpose old unwanted crayons and give them a new life.
Do you need a last-minute Valentine’s class gift hack? As Valentine’s Day is approaching, I am happy to share this creative idea to give out for my kids Valentine’s treats that are NOT candy! Well, with this DIY HEARTS MELTED CRAYONS hack, you can bring life to broken, unwanted, orphaned crayons! Besides, these heart-shaped crayons are a perfect homemade Valentine’s Day DIY project and a class gift to hand out at your child’s school. Due to COVID, many schools now restrict any type of food treats in the classroom, so I am happy to share this non-candy Valentine’s Day hack.
Or, if your crayons are too short to hold, broken, or just not appealing to your little one anymore, with this hack, you can give them a NEW LIFE! And if you involve your child in the process, they will LOVE their creations even more! Most importantly, since these DIY HEARTS MELTED CRAYONS are super easy to make, they make a perfect Valentine’s gift especially as a class gift where you have a lot of kids.

So if you have bags and bags of orphaned crayons everywhere, grab them, and let’s get cooking! This is the perfect use for them! AND did I mention? The more broken the crayons are, the better!!!
YOU’LL NEED FOR DIY HEARTS MELTED CRAYONS
- broken/old/unwanted crayons
- oven-safe mold (check for maximum temperature- mine said maximum 250 F) ~ we used THIS food-grade silicone mold
- an oven (small electric works too)
- OPTIONAL ~ we used THESE plastic small ornaments to place the melted crayons valentines

Valentine Class Gift Hack INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP ONE: Preheat your oven to 250 degrees.
STEP TWO: Collect your ‘unwanted’ broken crayons and peel the wrapper off of all of them. (Taking the paper off the crayons, is probably the most time-consuming part, so DO INVOLVE YOUR CHILD!) Lastly, break crayons into small pieces. (And adult might need to cut them with a knife.)
STEP THREE: Place crayon pieces into each of the heart molds. Make sure to add various colors in each and add some light with some dark colors. This way you will end up with a ‘colorful’ heart. I like to put a few small pieces of white/or silver into each mold because it helps define and pop other colors.
STEP FOUR: Place the mold onto a cookie sheet/tray and place in the oven for about 10 minutes. (All ovens cook differently. Watch for the crayons to melt, but take them out before all of the colors mix together too much!!)
WARNING: ALWAYS use proper ventilation. Melting crayons emit fumes which often cause headaches. If possible air out the kitchen! Alternatively, use a dedicated countertop toaster oven for all crafts and no food.
STEP FIVE: Take the mold out of the oven and let cool completely. The heart-shaped crayons should pop right out of the molds!

TIPS TO TAKE THE WRAPPER OFF:
- Use a sharp knife to slit a line down the crayon to slice the paper off (ADULTS ONLY)
- soak them in water for a few minutes and they peel right off.
SKILLs YOUR CHILD IS MASTERING
- creativity (in selecting which colors will look nicer together)
- color recognition
- classification and sorting
- patience (you WILL need it to take the wrapper off)
- hand-eye coordination
- fine motor control
- gross motor ( to break crayons in pieces)
- bilateral coordination ((using both sides of the body/ hands at the same time in a coordinated manner
- dexterity and more!
These melted crayons are perfect for toddlers as they are thicker to grasp than regular thin crayons!
AGE 6 Y+ Always supervise your child!⠀

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS
Complementary colors are pairs of colors which, when combined or mixed, cancel each other out (lose hue) by producing a grayscale color like white or black. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those two colors.

We ended up placing melted heart-shaped crayon in plastic mini ornaments along with some stickers and heart gems! They made PERFECT CLASS Valentine gifts!
