  • broken/old/unwanted crayons

Valentine Class Gift Hack INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP ONE: Preheat your oven to 250 degrees.

STEP TWO:  Collect your ‘unwanted’ broken crayons and peel the wrapper off of all of them. (Taking the paper off the crayons, is probably the most time-consuming part, so DO INVOLVE YOUR CHILD!) Lastly, break crayons into small pieces. (And adult might need to cut them with a knife.)

STEP THREE: Place crayon pieces into each of the heart molds. Make sure to add various colors in each and add some light with some dark colors. This way you will end up with a ‘colorful’ heart. I like to put a few small pieces of white/or silver into each mold because it helps define and pop other colors.

STEP FOUR: Place the mold onto a cookie sheet/tray and place in the oven for about 10 minutes. (All ovens cook differently. Watch for the crayons to melt, but take them out before all of the colors mix together too much!!)

WARNING: ALWAYS use proper ventilation. Melting crayons emit fumes which often cause headaches. If possible air out the kitchen! Alternatively, use a dedicated countertop toaster oven for all crafts and no food.

STEP FIVE: Take the mold out of the oven and let cool completely. The heart-shaped crayons should pop right out of the molds!

TIPS TO TAKE THE WRAPPER OFF:

  • Use a sharp knife to slit a line down the crayon to slice the paper off (ADULTS ONLY)
  • soak them in water for a few minutes and they peel right off.

SKILLs YOUR CHILD IS MASTERING

  • creativity (in selecting which colors will look nicer together)
  • color recognition
  • classification and sorting
  • patience (you WILL need it to take the wrapper off)
  • hand-eye coordination
  • fine motor control
  • gross motor ( to break crayons in pieces)
  • bilateral coordination ((using both sides of the body/ hands at the same time in a coordinated manner
  • dexterity and more!

These melted crayons are perfect for toddlers as they are thicker to grasp than regular thin crayons!

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS

Complementary colors are pairs of colors which, when combined or mixed, cancel each other out (lose hue) by producing a grayscale color like white or black. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those two colors.
